INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL INSURANCE

What do I need to buy international travel insurance?

•Being covered by the provincial health plan
•Travel dates
•Confirm not travelling against doctor’s advice
•Provide medical information and fill health questionnaire if applicable
•Pay the full premium

Your provincial health plan refunds more or less 8% of your emergency medical expenses when travelling outside Canada.
Example of a real-life claim: a family trip to the US, their 4-year-old child starts showing signs of an allergic reaction that quickly spreads all over the body.
Total hospital bill: $11 966 USD
Total refunded by the province: $610 USD
Total paid by travel insurance: $11 356

No. Your provincial coverage is intended for care within Canada only. When you leave the country, you are basically unprotected. International travel insurance is the only way to avoid serious financial risk.

• Unstable pre-existing medical conditions
• Routine monitoring of a medical condition
• Childbirth, psychological troubles or non-emergency medical services
• The abuse of alcohol, drugs or controlled substances
• High risk sports or activities, unless an optional coverage is purchased
• When the purpose of the trip is to receive medical treatment or medical attention

Travel insurance can cover any trips that do not exceed the permitted ouf-of-province time allowed by the provincial health insurance coverage.
However, an agreement can made with the province for longer trips; in this case, travel insurance will cover the full trip’s duration.

In some cases yes, but not always. It is always in your best interest to purchase insurance for the total duration of your trip.
If you need to extend your coverage while you are on your trip, you should contact your travel insurance advisor or the insurance company, before the expiry date of the policy.
